Wigs are not limited to only healthy individuals: people who have lost their hair for medical reasons often choose to wear a wig.

How to wear a wig

If you have your own hair, you must hide it under the wig. Many wigs come with attached hair nets, which are also available in any well-stocked drugstore.

You pin your hair up in a bun or chignon and secure it as flat as possible against the scalp using hair clips. Then you cover it with a net, which will ensure that your hair stays in place, even if some clips come loose. Over the net, you then put on the wig, which you have pre-styled.

Yes, style the wig's hair before you put it on. This is easiest done by placing it on a wig stand, where you can also store it when not in use, without worrying about it getting tangled.

If you don't have hair, it's good to invest in a higher-quality wig made just for you. Or in a soft liner that you wear on your scalp so that the inside of the wig does not irritate.

Care and maintenance of the wig

Although wigs are a “no-commitment” hairstyle, that doesn't mean they require no maintenance. Hair can quickly become damaged and tangled without proper care, and such a wig is beyond help.

Styling the wig

Read the instructions that come with your wig for the correct way to style it.

Especially with synthetic wigs, check whether they can be styled with chemicals, such as gels and sprays, and whether they can be heat styled with irons and curlers.

Certain materials might melt!

Real hair wigs, of course, will not melt, but they will become dry, damaged, and straw-like if styled excessively. If you frequently use chemicals and heat on a natural wig, make sure you nourish and hydrate the hair well.

Washing the wig

As with styling, the instructions for washing vary by manufacturer. Read how you can wash your wig when you receive it.

Generally, you should wash the wig only when and if necessary. Also, always wash every wig by hand!

Wash synthetic wigs with mild shampoos, and you can use a gentle fabric softener as a conditioner. Always air dry the wig, not with a hair dryer.

For wigs made from natural hair, use a shampoo for dry hair, and also treat them with argan oil. You can also use hair care products containing silk proteins.

Storing the wig

Regardless of whether the wig is made from synthetic or real hair, it is best to store and style it on the previously mentioned wig stand. This is a head-shaped stand that allows the wig to maintain its shape and prevents the hair from getting tangled.

If you don't have a stand, or you are traveling with the wig, turn it inside out: tuck the hair into the net that is attached to the wig. This is especially recommended for synthetic wigs, as the artificial fibers can be quickly destroyed by rubbing against cardboard, clothing, and other surfaces.
